2018 · Urban Heritage, Development and City Brand Management

Aswan August 6 – 18, 2018
and Cologne August 19 – 24, 2018

Urban Heritage has become a key issue in heritage studies in the last years. More than half of the world’s population now living in urban environments, the main problems of urbanity and urban development – population growth, land encroaching, mass tourism, social inequality and gentrification – heavily impact on the conservation and management of cultural and natural heritage in urban areas.

UN 2030 Agenda’s Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11 – Make cities and human settlkements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable - was answered by UNESCO’s initiative Culture: Urban Future – The Role of Cultural Heritage for Sustainable Local Development in 2015/16. CASSHS 2018 will discuss these and other new international frameworks and their role in national and local governance. A special focus will be on Aswan city, and for comparison on German initiatives in the cities of Cologne and Essen, both of them rich in heritage, the latter having been awarded European Green Capital in 2017.

The programme will focus on the following topics:

  1. Urban culture, urban heritage, development and sustainability, with a discussion of the diverse aspects of the Historic Urban Landscape (HUL) approach and the importance of urban culture and heritage in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of UN’s 2030 Agenda and the New Urban Agenda of Habitat III.
  2. From city marketing to city brand management: the importance of heritage and sustainability in the brand development process.
  3. Cultural mapping as an instrument for research in urban heritage and development.
