The objective of this PhD project is to examine social protocol during the ancient Egyptian New Kingdom (ca. 1550 to 1070 BC). The novelty of this project will lie in the persons involved, but also in its sociological and socio-historical approaches.

As for the persons involved, this project will not focus only on the protocol between the king and his high-ranking officials, but will extend to the study of the protocol between the members of this elite as well as between this elite and their subordinates.

Then, possible matches between the royal protocol and the civil protocol will be examined, mainly as potential tokens for a process of social imitation of the king by the elite. This will be the sociological approach.

The socio-historical approach will consist in tracking the evolution of both protocols during the whole New Kingdom, especially moments of drastic changes in the royal protocol, in order, for example, to determine whether they could be reactions against too much imitation.
