Teaching

Sabbatical in winter semester 2018/19

I teach Egyptian archaeology and language on graduate and undergraduate level. In my courses, students learn source critical skills and engage with theoretically informed discussions of ancient Egyptian society and culture. I encourage students to think independently, develop their own view and engage critically with the opinions of others. I welcome students who take initiative and bring their own ideas to discussions in class.

I have published the introductory course book Complete Middle Egyptian using new methods for learning the ancient Egyptian language and hieroglyphs developed for how modern languages are taught, including the discovery method and contextual learning. The book is based on original texts from the beginning and can be used by autodidacts. It embeds the learning of signs and grammar in explanations of ancient Egyptian kingship, religion, literature and administration.
